Growing systems
Root mass: moderate.
Growing media
| Medium | pH effect | Retention | Bacterial surface |

| Soil-based mix (Potting soil) | varies | high | high |
| Coco coir (Coconut coir) | slightly acidic | high | moderate |
Nutrient demand by stage
NPK ratios are relative weights. EC targets shift through the plant's life.
| Stage | N | P | K | EC (mS/cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| seedling | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| vegetative | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1.6 |
Companion-growing notes
- Heavy uptake of potassium. Co-grown crops with the same demand will end up deficient even at "correct" EC.
Aquaponics suitability
Compatible
Fish waste provides enough nitrogen for healthy growth. Supplemental potassium, calcium, and iron may still be needed depending on fish stocking density.
Care notes
A warm-weather rhizome crop with culture similar to ginger. Use a large container (15 L) or media bed with about 15 cm of loose substrate. EC 1.4-2.0 mS/cm. pH 5.5-7.0. Temperature: 22–32°C (tropical; growth stops below 15°C). High humidity (60%+). Moderate light (DLI 10-18 mol/m2/day; tolerates partial shade). Propagate from fresh turmeric rhizome (choose plump, organic pieces with visible growth buds) planted 5 cm deep; growth emerges in 2-4 weeks. Harvest the whole clump at 8-12 months as the leaves yellow and die back, with each planted piece producing a clump of 5-15 new fingers. Fresh turmeric is grated into dishes, blended into smoothies and golden milk, or juiced. To dry it, boil the rhizomes for 30-45 minutes (this cures them and prevents sprouting), dehydrate and grind to powder. Turmeric stains everything permanently, so wear gloves and use a dedicated cutting board.
